A photo series by Sharon Lomanno recalls another time; a golden age of jazz. Blue notes swaying beneath melodies that urgent rhythms drive forwards, song structures taken and improvised until new songs emerged, finding their own place in the annuls of the hypothetical Great American Songbook.
We who didn’t live that time imagine what it was like.
With Juanma By el Cuco’s styling, models Iride Fontana and Saintbeau Sambou have a contemporary vibe. But that golden age – where notes swirled with the cigarette smoke and emotion poured like sweat in the crowded heat – is what’s captured in Lomanno’s black and white images.
Still today, jazz is more than a genre, it’s a language.
